Applications are invited for suitably qualified Pacific Island Country nationals for Graduate Scholarships to undertake a Master’s Degree or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by research only at the University of the South Pacific (USP).

Eight awards are tenable from mid-2019. The research will involve fieldwork and data analysis related to fisheries or sustainable marine development in the target beneficiary countries. The countries are: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Research Areas

Preference will be given to students with a strong interest in one or more of the following:

  • Marine Protected Area management and Marine Spatial Planning
  • Coastal Environment, Ecosystems, Iconic Species
  • Food Security, Energy Security and Sustainable Livelihoods
  • Fisheries and Marine Resource Policy, Negotiations and Governance
  • Community-based Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries Management
  • Assessment and management of data-poor fisheries
  • Climate and Environmental Accounting and Financing
  • Ocean Acidification and Pollution
  • Monitoring and Evaluation for Climate Change Adaptation/Disaster Risk Management Projects focused on fisheries, coastal ecosystems or marine resource development
  • Sustainable Development of Marine Resources, Blue Economies
  • Other climate change, adaptation, mitigation, and marine or fisheries related topics

A willingness to start work as soon as possible would be beneficial.

Benefits and Conditions

The PEUMP scholarship award in 2019 will comprise the following:

  • Tuition fees (paid directly)
  • Book allowance of up to FJD 1,875 for Masters students and FJD 3,000 for PhD students
  • General Services fees (paid directly)
  • Health Services fees (paid directly)
  • Living allowance of FJD 53,625 for Masters students (5 semesters) and FJD 85,800 for PhD students (8 semesters)
  • Dependents allowance of FJD 27,205 for Masters students and FJD 43,528 for PhD students qualifying awardees
  • Establishment allowance of FJD 1,942 for qualifying awardees
  • Research grant – after the research plan and budget have been approved by the appropriate Research Committee
  • Travel allowance of up to FJD 2,000 for qualifying awardees

Scholarship Conditions

These scholarships are for full-time study (for Masters Degree, 5 semesters and for PhD, 8 semesters), beginning in Semester 2, 2019.

Scholarship holders will also be expected to contribute to the USP PEUMP project activities as required.


Applicants must be nationals of one of the 15 target countries, and preferably be 35 years or younger for Masters studies and 45 years or younger for PhD studies at the time of application to be considered for the scholarship.  Applicants for a Master’s programme must have completed a Postgraduate Diploma with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or above. Applicants for a PhD programme must have completed a Masters degree.

  1. Completed Applicant Detail Form
  2. Cover letter or a letter of application
  3. An outline of proposed research topic research Intent– which demonstrates knowledge of the proposed subject *
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. Name and contact details of three referees
  6. Certified true copies of relevant transcripts and certificates
  7. Proof of citizenship
