In response to the global epidemic and consequences associated with climate change, numerous Pacific Island Countries (PIC) have taken it upon themselves to convert to green energy.
The initiative supports the main objectives of reducing the region’s dependency on imported fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gases emissions while increasing the accessibility of energy for travellers and rural users.
For example, in 2016 the island of Ta’u of American Samoa finalised an $8 million project for a new solar-powered micro-grid that has shifted the entire island’s energy generation from diesel energy to 100 percent solar power.
This is one of many renewable energy projects in the South Pacific.
