A new, cool and very eco hotel to add to your wish list. indigoeight has been appointed to represent the world’s first fully sustainable, energy neutral hotel, which opened in Amsterdam this summer. Using nature as inspiration, combined with clever technology and special engineering, the highly efficient waterfront Four Elements Hotel Amsterdam is located on IJburg, an area made up of three reclaimed islands.
Powered By Nature
Four Elements Hotel Amsterdam owes its name to its natural energy sources of Wind, Water, Earth and Fire. These elements are evident through the sustainable initiatives, outlets and experiences within the hotel, which have already been recognised with a government award*.
Fully powered by renewable energy, the restaurant and 195 rooms all operate on the principle of zero waste, with little or no environmental impact. Each room has a desk, flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with shower with eco bio-cosmetics provided. Examples of small space eco design add charm and character throughout.
The Herbs Garden Restaurant serves local, seasonal and healthy cuisine, using herbs from its own greenhouse. The drinks menu has an emphasis on those from Holland and includes a biodynamic wine list. On the 10th floor, the Wind Sky Bar is one of the highest rooftop bars in Amsterdam, with panoramic views and a spacious sun terrace overlooking the marina.
Four Elements Hotel Amsterdam implements sustainability and circularity in every detail, with minimal impact on the environment. From furniture to floors and linen to shower heads, everything is durable, recycled or upcycled and allergy-free.
Employees wear circular jeans, the hotel bikes are composed of reused parts dredged from Amsterdam’s canals and the water glasses are made of used wine bottles. Coffee cups in the rooms have been crafted from unwanted scraps of clay from primary schools, while the beds have eco-friendly linen. Behind every object lies a beautiful and sustainable story; together with its guests, the hotel contributes to a cleaner world.
Solar panels on the roof and the exterior façades provide enough energy for the hotel to be fully self-sufficient. Guests using the gym equipment generate energy which is used elsewhere in the property.
Furthermore, the hotel design uses smart principles from nature for sustainable innovation. For example, the building’s climate control is inspired by the natural ventilation in desert termite hills, which maintain a constant temperature while it fluctuates between 40 degrees and freezing outside. By controlling air flows, Four Elements Hotel Amsterdam is the first hotel to use gravity, wind and sunlight to form a natural air conditioning system that provides a constant temperature and continually refreshed clean air.
Location – where nature and city meet
The 10-storey hotel is centrally located on the green, man-made island of IJburg, connected to the city by a bridge. The beach is 15mins walk away, and plenty of water sports are available on Lake IJ. It offers an excellent base to discover the new city district of IJburg with its port and modern architecture, while central Amsterdam is just a 15-minute tram ride away.
